FAMEX is a commercial platform of the aerospace, defense and security sectors that offers technology and flight demonstrations. Moreover, it is a business center and technology and service exchange platform that promotes foreign direct investment, job generation, training and development of human capital in Mexico through the coordination of all players in the triple helix: government, academia and industry.
Monterrey Aerocluster is younger than the previous two and hosts 33 companies, including Exova, Noranco, Tecmaq, Viakable, USTI, AEISA, Mimsa and Frisa. Created in 2009, the cluster follows a triple helix approach. Its goal is to incorporate local suppliers into national and international supply chains. The cluster’s strategy is to capitalize on Nuevo Leon’s numerous infrastructure advantages, including proximity to the US border, extensive experience with several manufacturing industries and existing suppliers.
Known as the youngest and seen by some as the most dynamic aerospace cluster in Mexico, Queretaro Aerocluster was created after Bombardier’s arrival to the state in 2006, from which point the sector grew quickly. The state now hosts Aernnova, ITP, Bombardier and Airbus Helicopters, among many others. It also has the only university in Mexico specialized in the aerospace industry, UNAQ, and the largest MRO center in Latin America, TechOps. Queretaro specializes in the manufacture of motor and landing-gear components.
Chihuahua hosts Textron Aviation, Bell Helicopter, Honeywell, Safran, Zodiac Aerospace, Westinghouse, GKN Aerospace and over 40 specialized suppliers. According to the cluster, the aerospace industry generates over 17,000 direct jobs, over US$1 billion in local and foreign investment and more than US$1.5 billion in annual exports. The state has capabilities for high-precision machining and heat and thermal treatments and manufactures harnesses, aircraft parts,
structures, seats and slides. Aerospace Cluster Chihuahua aims to make the industry an economic driver for the region.
French aerospace and defense company Safran produces aircraft engines and aerospace components. It is the largest employer in Mexico’s aerospace industry with a 11,500-strong staff working at 19 facilities in Tijuana, Chihuahua, Queretaro and Mexico City. These include the largest aircraft wiring plant in the world, three MRO centers and two production facilities of critical components for jet engines. Safran merged with aircraft equipment manufacturer Zodiac Aerospace in February 2018.
